My friends, Norma and Jan rescued me this afternoon. They called about 5:00 and said we're going to the harbor, do you want to go? ...heck yeah! We went up on Allen to check out the hatchery situation and I'm happy to report that the hens are sitting the nests. We got a little too close and scared them away but they returned to the nests as soon as we backed off a little. There should be some good baby heron pictures before too long. We also saw the usual suspects...pelicans, gulls and cormorants. There were sunflowers down by the old boat ramp...I know, I know, just lowly, common sunflowers but the colors were so vibrant in the late day sun that I just had to take a few shots. Thank you, Norma and Jan for getting me out and about for a little while!

Well, I've seriously upset my picture a day schedule. I've had a multitude of problems to deal with including losing my internet for a week, having no transportation and mostly, involved in a project at work which has left me no time to get out to shoot anything. I took a quick snap of another of my "kids" tonight and it will have to suffice as my picture for the day. It's the only picture I've taken in over a week. I don't know just when my vida loco is going to get back to normal but I'll try to post more. This is "The Gimpster", so called because he was crippled at birth...I couldn't give up on him though and now he's a healthy, active, happy boy.

OK, it's really a Sandpiper but it's on a fence so what can I say. This guy was at community park. It was a terrible day for photography...cold,windy, damp, overcast...you name it but at least I got something. It's been a heck of a day. I'm whipped and going to bed.

It was another day with not much time for photography. I did manage another ringbill portrait and was able to catch the Maria N coming down the channel...she's had her riggers removed which usually means a conversion to another type of fishing is in her future...maybe long line or trap fishing.

I downloaded a trial version of photoshop CS4 so I had to play. Filters and effects are really not my usual thing but Hey, gotta try all this stuff out, huh? Today was a very dreary, overcast day with cold winds and near 100% humidity so I didn't stay out too long. I found these cattails out by the causeway.

Not being one to give up easily (or hardheaded) I went back to Steadman Point this evening to try to catch a sunset. I tried yesterday but clouds on the horizon blocked it out. The clouds weren't much better this evening and it was getting foggy but I, at least, got this shot before the sun dipped behind the clouds.

Woo Hoo...I went to Lighthouse Trails Park about 5:30 this afternoon and was rewarded with the sight of two gulf boats coming out...haven't seen a double for quite a while. On the way home, I stopped at Steadman Point to watch the sunset but the low-lying clouds completely obscured it. I hung around for a while to enjoy the solitude and decided to shoot the bridge and town from the point. This is a 20 second exposure.

I was able to get very close to this heron at Steadman Point and I was taken by the translucent quality of his beak. The sun was behind him and I was using a 500mm lens. When I left Steadmans, I headed for the road to the Harbor Island Terminal. I got there just in time to catch these dolphins playing in the bow wave of an outgoing boat.

I went to the old sunken boats in Conn Brown Harbor this evening to check on the progress of the herons nest building activity. This nest is the one that I got to witness the first stick being laid. It's progressing nicely. The poor cormorant was holding on for dear life as he tried to dry his wings...it was very windy this evening. The tug Miss Monie was showing off her blue deck lights as she was pushing an LPG gas barge past the FEMA docks. All in all, not a totally wasted trip to Conn Brown.

I don't often shoot seagulls. I guess they're just so common here on the coast that I don't notice them much. I was watching them today and marveled at the grace of their flight so I decided a few photos might be in order. These are ring billed gulls and are probably the most common type on the gulf coast.

Today was another work day but by 3:00 o'clock, I had had enough. I ventured forth in the mood to shoot some abandoned barns or other farm buildings. I kept driving and wound up in Goliad. I finally gave up on the derelict architecture but I did find a few sights in this small, historically significant Texas town.

Another late day for my quest for a photo. I made it out to Harbor Island just in time for the sunset and as I was heading back to town, I stopped to shoot the lights of the cars crossing the bridge. As I crossed the bridge I looked over at the Memorial Tower and figured that would be a good spot for my last shots of the day.

It was another busy day so I had to wait until late afternoon to look for a photograph. I spent about an hour on Harbor Island and then stopped by the harbor on my way home. The clouds over the lighthouse were pretty dramatic before I left the island and the egret obligingly gave me a "low and slow". The tug showed up just in time to catch the last light of the day. As always, click on the image for a larger view.

This is a familiar scene to anyone who's ever traveled the roads in Texas (or just about any other state...but we'll claim it for Texas) these are everywhere and the ranching business would probably have died out years ago without them...well, maybe not :)

Another busy day for yours truly...I did manage to make a mad dash by the harbor this afternoon and catch this boat, freshly hauled out. I have to make a trip to San Antonio tomorrow so the doctors at the VA hospital can poke around on me. I'll try to find internet up there but if I can't, I'll post Tuesday's shot along with Wednesday's when I get back to town.
